He is based in King's Lynn, Norfolk, UK, and works, not only with clients in travelling distance of his office, but also regularly with clients from around the country and the world using the telephone and internet. He has been in Private Practice since 1997.

James Rye was trained in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) from the Albert Ellis Institute in New York, and in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) at the University of East Anglia. He also has an MA in Counselling from the University of Nottingham. He is an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP Accred) and is an registered practitioner on the United Kingdom Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (UKRCP). He also works as a supervisor for other counsellors and psychotherapists and has a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Supervision from the University of Derby.

In addition to working with clients who refer themselves, James also works with a range of Employee Assistance Programmes offering fixed term CBT counselling for employees (for example, Argent Rehabilitation, Corpore, Psycho-Legal-Medical, Employee Advisory Resource, Norwich Union Occupational Health, The Validium Group, Workplace Options UK, Retail Trust, Psychology Works, Oakdale Services Ltd., Borough Council of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk, Norfolk County Council, East Anglian Ambulance Service, First Eastern Counties Buses, Freebridge Community Housing). He also receives occasional enquiries and referals from General Practitioners, Solicitors, and Charities.
